AQUASENSE Project Unveils Smart Water Quality Monitoring with IoT Tech

In a groundbreaking study published in ‘Engineering Proceedings,’ researchers from the AQUASENSE project have unveiled an innovative approach to water quality monitoring that harnesses the power of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. The study, led by Sofia Batsi from Wireless Embedded Systems Technologies L’Aquila Srl, explores two distinct network topologies designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of pollution detection in water bodies.

Water scarcity and quality are pressing global issues, heavily influenced by industrial waste and climate change. The AQUASENSE project aims to tackle these challenges by developing a robust communication system that enables real-time monitoring of water quality. The research evaluates two scenarios: a single-hop network where sensors transmit data directly to a remote server and a two-tier network where local aggregators collect and relay information. Batsi emphasizes the importance of this technology, stating, “Prompt detection of water pollution is not just beneficial; it is essential for environmental protection and public health.”

The results from the simulations conducted using the SimuLTE/OMNeT++ framework reveal significant insights into network performance. The study found that utilizing aggregators to collect data from sensors leads to improved Quality of Service (QoS), particularly in alarm monitoring conditions. Batsi notes, “Our findings indicate that intelligent data aggregation can dramatically enhance network efficiency and accuracy in detecting pollution events.”

The implications of this research extend beyond academic interest; they hold substantial commercial potential for the water, sanitation, and drainage sectors.
