Sustainable Tourism: Powering Green Growth and Clean Energy

In the quest for sustainable development, the tourism industry is emerging as a powerful ally, with new research shedding light on its potential to drive economic growth while preserving the environment. A groundbreaking study led by Payel Das from the Amrita School of Business at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has unveiled how sustainable tourism can align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a roadmap for the energy sector and beyond.

The study, published in Discover Sustainability, which translates to Discovering Sustainability in English, employed advanced machine learning techniques to analyze publications from 2015 to 2023. By using a BERTopic model, Das and her team identified key themes that illustrate the role of sustainable tourism in fostering economic growth, environmental conservation, and community resilience.

One of the most compelling findings is the tourism-energy-economy nexus, which highlights the urgent need for clean energy solutions to mitigate emissions linked to tourism-driven economic expansion. “The tourism industry is a significant contributor to economic growth, but it also comes with a substantial carbon footprint,” Das explained. “Our research shows that by integrating clean energy solutions, we can achieve a balance between economic benefits and environmental sustainability.”

This nexus is particularly relevant to the energy sector, as it underscores the need for innovative energy solutions to power the tourism industry sustainably. From solar-powered resorts to electric transportation, the opportunities for energy companies to contribute to sustainable tourism are vast and varied.

The study also emphasizes the importance of geotourism and geoheritage development in promoting geological knowledge and conservation. By generating local economic opportunities, these initiatives contribute to quality education (SDG 4) and support sustainable livelihoods. This theme is particularly relevant to rural communities, where tourism can serve as a catalyst for economic development.

Moreover, the research highlights the potential of rural and smart data-driven tourism to enhance decent work and economic growth (SDG 8). By integrating technology and local resources into sustainable development strategies, tourism can create new job opportunities and support local economies.

The findings also underscore the role of ecotourism and community engagement in empowering local populations and fostering sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). Through collaborative conservation efforts, tourism can support partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) and promote responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).

As the tourism industry continues to grow, the insights from this research will be invaluable in shaping future developments. By adopting a more nuanced approach to sustainable tourism, considering diverse regional contexts, and leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data, the industry can maximize its contribution to achieving the SDGs.

Das’s research not only provides a roadmap for the tourism industry but also offers a compelling case for the energy sector to innovate and adapt. As we strive for a more sustainable future, the intersection of tourism, energy, and environmental conservation will be crucial in achieving our collective goals. The study published in Discover Sustainability serves as a call to action for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to collaborate and drive meaningful change.
