Stephen Slessor Takes Helm at British Water Amid Industry Challenges

Stephen Slessor steps into the role of Chair at British Water, succeeding Dr Mark Fletcher after a three-year tenure. Slessor, a seasoned leader in the UK water industry, brings a wealth of experience spanning 25 years in engineering, digital construction approaches, and strategic leadership. His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the sector, as it grapples with pressing challenges such as climate change, regulatory shifts, and skills development.

Currently, Slessor serves as CEO of RSE, a leading UK water technology company specialising in modular solutions for sustainable water and wastewater treatment. Under his leadership since January 2024, RSE has experienced significant growth and expansion both domestically and internationally. His extensive background includes a 17-year career at Galliford Try (GT), where he rose from quantity surveyor to managing director, overseeing the merger of GT water with NMCN PLC in 2021 to create the largest contractor in the UK water sector.

Slessor’s appointment aligns with British Water’s vision for a world-leading, outcome-focused water and wastewater sector. “I’m humbled to step into the role as chair of British Water as our sector steps up to meet the next few decades’ most pressing challenges, whether that be related to climate, regulatory changes, or skills necessary skills development,” Slessor said. “The input and innovation of our growing membership are more critical than ever in delivering a more sustainable and resilient UK water ecosystem, and I will endeavour to champion the vital work they do at every turn.”
