Jonathan Samuel, former chief executive of the Gas Safe Register, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Water Regs UK. This strategic move comes as the current MD role for Water Regs UK and WRAS Approvals is divided to support the continued growth of both organisations. Julie Spinks, the current MD for both companies, will continue to lead WRAS Approvals, while Samuel will focus solely on Water Regs UK and join the board of WaterSafe.
Samuel brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having started his career as an apprentice with British Gas before joining CORGI as a field inspector. Most recently, he led the Gas Safe Register as chief executive for a decade. His appointment signals a significant shift in the water sector, as his extensive background in gas safety regulation and enforcement could bring fresh perspectives to water regulation and enforcement.
Water Regs UK plays a crucial role in supporting UK water companies to develop and enforce water fittings regulations and byelaws, which are vital for protecting the quality of public water supplies and preventing water waste. The organisation also manages the Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS) and administers the WaterSafe register, which includes members of WIAPS and trade schemes APHC, CIPHE and SNIPEF.
Samuel expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “I’m really keen to get my feet under the table and see where I can make a difference. I’m hoping to bring my knowledge and experience of nearly 40 years into the water industry to help plumbers, companies and anyone associated with the sector.” He emphasised his commitment to working closely with water companies to support their essential role in enforcing water regulations. Additionally, he aims to influence government policies, support plumbers and consumers, promote water conservation, and ensure that consumers receive competent and safe plumbing services.
Julie Spinks, who will continue to lead WRAS Approvals, praised Samuel’s appointment, saying, “It has been a privilege to lead Water Regs UK for nearly 13 years. I will continue my mission to help people comply with the regulations to protect public health and keep water safe, with WRAS Approvals. I’m delighted to be handing the reins of the organisation into Jonathan’s safe and experienced hands and looking forward to seeing the experience he brings from the Gas Safe Register and working with him.”
Samuel’s appointment could mark a turning point for the water sector, as his cross-sector experience may drive innovation in water regulation and enforcement. His focus on collaboration with water companies, government influence, and consumer advocacy could reshape the sector’s approach to water safety and conservation. As the water industry faces increasing challenges, such as climate change and aging infrastructure, Samuel’s leadership could be instrumental in driving progress and ensuring the sector’s resilience.
