Sylvain Maladière, a researcher at the Dental Faculty of the University of Montpellier, has brought fresh data to an under-examined corner of healthcare: the environmental shadow cast by a single dental implant. His team’s life-cycle assessment, published in *Cleaner Environmental Systems*, traces every gram of titanium and every millilitre of sterile water used from factory gate to clinic chair. The numbers are sobering—15 kg of CO₂-equivalent emissions and 340 litres of water for one half-gram implant. “What surprised us was how the placement stage dominated the footprint,” Maladière notes. “Over 70 % of the impact comes from single-use drapes, syringes and peel-off pouches that are opened once and then discarded.”
The audit is the first to combine manufacturer data from the Brånemark Integration company with real-world theatre logs from Montpellier University Hospital, giving policymakers and suppliers a granular baseline. For every implant placed, 2.5 kg of waste is generated; 1.8 kg is plastic destined for incineration or landfill. When the team modelled a simple recycling loop—returning titanium drill bits and abutment caps to the supplier—global warming potential fell by roughly 10 %. Reuse scenarios, such as sterilising titanium carriers, trimmed emissions even further.
The findings arrive as the energy sector braces for tighter Scope 3 reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Titanium suppliers, dental distributors and hospital procurement officers now have a clear commercial lever: shifting from “single-use” to “single-reuse-plus-recycle” protocols can cut both carbon levies and procurement budgets. Maladière’s group is already in talks with regional health authorities to pilot reusable instrument kits, a move that could ripple into other surgical disciplines.
What remains unanswered is whether patients—or insurers—will accept marginally longer chair times in exchange for a smaller planetary footprint. Prevention, the authors stress, is still the sharpest tool: fewer implants placed today mean fewer cradles-to-grave impacts tomorrow.
