Mamytova’s analysis cuts through the noise of ESG reporting to expose a critical reality: the way capital is allocated today determines whether the energy transition accelerates or stalls. “ESG is not just about compliance or optics anymore,” Mamytova states. “It’s a financial lever that reshapes investment incentives, governance structures, and even corporate survival strategies.”
The study identifies three interlocking mechanisms through which ESG investment signals drive decarbonization. First, capital reallocation: ESG-weighted financing—such as green bonds or sustainability-linked loans—makes low-carbon technologies cheaper to fund while raising the cost of carbon-heavy projects. This isn’t theory. European energy majors like Ørsted and Repsol have already seen their borrowing costs fall when they commit to emissions targets, while coal-dependent utilities face higher financing hurdles.
Second, governance mandates are forcing change from within.
