Coffee Waste Brews Sustainable Skincare Revolution

The coffee you drink every morning could soon be doing more than just keeping you awake—it might also be keeping your skin healthy. Researchers from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece have found a way to turn coffee industry waste into a valuable ingredient for skincare products, offering a sustainable solution that aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly cosmetics.

Led by Kalliopi-Anna Theodoridou from the Laboratory of Polymer and Color Chemistry and Technology, the team explored how coffee silverskin—a byproduct of coffee roasting—could be repurposed into antioxidant-rich additives for cosmetic creams. Coffee silverskin, often discarded as waste, was processed into oil and extracts using various methods, including hot and cold olive oil extraction and water extraction. The resulting compounds were then tested for their sunscreen and antioxidant properties before being incorporated into six different emulsion creams.

The findings were promising. The creams, including a control and formulations with varying concentrations of coffee silverskin extracts and oil, demonstrated stability in pH and viscosity, with the versions containing 3% and 6% coffee silverskin oil showing particularly high viscosity. The sun protection factor (SPF) of the creams ranged from 1.33 to 3.49, with the 6% coffee silverskin oil cream achieving the highest SPF value. Additionally, all emulsions exhibited strong antioxidant activity, making them not only sustainable but also functional in skincare.

Theodoridou noted, “This research highlights the potential of coffee silverskin as a multifunctional ingredient in cosmetic formulations. By repurposing a waste product, we’re not only reducing environmental impact but also creating value-added products that meet consumer demand for natural and sustainable skincare.”

For industries like water, sanitation, and drainage, where sustainability and circular economy principles are increasingly important, this study offers a compelling example of how waste streams can be transformed into high-value resources. The cosmetics industry, in particular, has been under pressure to adopt greener practices, and innovations like this could pave the way for more eco-conscious product development.
