Zeynab Malekian, a researcher in the Department of Architecture at Shahrood University of Technology, has uncovered a pressing challenge for university campuses in Iran: many environmental sustainability measures are falling short. Her study, published in *Āmūzish-i Muḥīṭ-i Zīst va Tusi̒ah-i Pāydār* (Journal of Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development), examines the Central Campus of Shahrood University of Technology and finds that key indicators—such as energy conservation, waste recycling, rainwater harvesting, and clean energy use—are currently underperforming. The findings suggest that with targeted improvements, the campus could significantly reduce its environmental footprint.
Malekian’s research blends qualitative and quantitative methods, combining data from questionnaires, interviews, and on-site observations with analysis using SPSS 28 and AMOS 24. Her assessment reveals that while universities are often seen as leaders in sustainability education, their operational practices don’t always reflect that role. “Universities have a dual responsibility,” she notes. “They must educate future generations on environmental stewardship while also modeling sustainable behavior in their daily operations.”
The commercial implications are clear for energy and infrastructure sectors. If campuses adopt smart energy systems, integrate renewable sources, and improve water and waste management, demand for clean technologies and sustainable building materials could rise. Investors and contractors focused on green construction may find new opportunities in retrofitting existing university facilities or designing next-generation eco-friendly campuses.
The study also highlights the role of behavioral change—such as promoting bicycle use and waste separation—as low-cost yet high-impact strategies. These measures don’t require massive infrastructure overhauls but can yield measurable environmental benefits.
As awareness grows, universities worldwide may look to Iran for a case study in balancing education, sustainability, and operational efficiency. The findings suggest that small, strategic upgrades can drive meaningful progress—turning campuses from environmental liabilities into models of sustainable development.
