Revitalizing Ukraine’s Dnipro Reservoirs Secures Energy Future

Olena Stepova, a researcher at the National University «Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic», argues that the Kremenchuk Reservoir—a critical link in the Dnipro’s chain—demands urgent revitalization. Speaking to *Environmental Problems*, she explains that the reservoir’s ecological health is not just an environmental concern but a commercial one. “When sediments accumulate, they reduce the reservoir’s capacity, which directly impacts hydroelectric generation and water supply reliability,” Stepova notes. “If we don’t act, we’re not just losing water—we’re losing energy security.”

The proposed solution blends engineering with ecological restoration. Stepova and her team advocate for a dual approach: constructing embankments to stabilize eroding shores and creating “washing islands” to scour accumulated sediments from the reservoir floor. The goal? To deepen the reservoir, restore its storage capacity, and fortify its banks against future erosion. It’s a strategy that could extend the lifespan of Ukraine’s aging hydraulic infrastructure while preserving its economic function.

For the energy sector, the stakes are clear. Hydroelectric plants like those along the Dnipro rely on consistent water flow and reservoir depth to maintain output.
