Published in *Next Sustainability* (formerly *Näxt Sosteneyti* in Amharic), the study warns that unchecked industrial runoff, agricultural chemicals, and domestic waste are turning once-safe water sources into potential health hazards.
“Industrial zones are particularly problematic,” Ambaye notes. “We’re seeing concentrations of toxic metals that far exceed international safety limits, especially in areas near factories and urban centers.” The findings suggest that communities relying on groundwater for drinking are at serious risk, with long-term exposure linked to cancer, neurological damage, and developmental issues in children.
