CASA Honors GSD, Lystek for Wastewater Breakthrough

The California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA) has awarded Lystek International and the Goleta Sanitary District (GSD) for their joint innovation in wastewater treatment, recognizing their use of Lystek’s Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP®) to enhance biogas production and reduce biosolids. The project, implemented in 2019, integrates LysteMize® technology to hydrolyze thickened waste activated sludge, improving the efficiency of mesophilic anaerobic digesters at GSD’s facility.

Steve Wagner, GSD’s General Manager and District Engineer, emphasized the district’s strategic goals: “Two of the main drivers for the next few years at our District are to become energy neutral and reduce our biosolids expenses. Being able to produce our own power will make us more resilient during power outages and reducing our overall biosolids quantities will reduce the ongoing expenses associated with disposal. The Lystek project has shown us success in both of these areas.”

The award highlights a shift in wastewater management toward energy independence and sustainability, aligning with broader industry trends focused on renewable resource utilization and operational resilience. Lystek’s technology enables facilities to maximize biogas output while minimizing residual solids, a dual benefit that addresses both economic and environmental pressures in the sector.

For GSD, the long-term implications extend beyond cost savings. By reducing biosolids volumes and generating on-site energy, the district strengthens its operational reliability—a critical advantage in an era of increasing climate volatility and energy grid instability. The project’s success suggests a scalable model for other municipalities grappling with similar challenges, particularly those aiming to transition from conventional digestion methods to more advanced, resource-efficient systems.

Lystek’s role extends beyond technology supply; the company offers turnkey solutions, including design-build services and regional processing options, positioning it as a key player in North America’s biosolids and organics management landscape. Their LysteGro® fertilizer, derived from processed biosolids, further underscores the circular economy principles driving innovation in the sector.

This recognition by CASA signals growing industry acceptance of high-solids hydrolysis as a viable pathway to sustainability, challenging the status quo of traditional wastewater treatment. As more agencies prioritize energy neutrality and waste reduction, collaborations like this one between Lystek and GSD may set a new benchmark for operational efficiency and environmental stewardship in municipal utilities.
